Adult Mental Health First Aid - Two Day course

Our two day adult MHFA course qualifies you as a Mental Health First Aider. Over the course of the two days, you will learn how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis. 

By taking the two-day course, you will gain:​
  1. An in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing
  2. Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
  3. Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress
  4. Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
  5. Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support - whether that’s self-help resources, through their employer, the NHS, or a mix

Course outline

The course is delivered in four manageable chunks, each with a focus on how to apply Mental Health First Aid skills:
  • Session 1 – Mental Health First Aid, mental health, and depression.
  • Session 2 – Depression (cont.) and suicidal crisis.
  • Session 3 – Anxiety, personality disorders, eating disorders and self-harm.
  • Session 4 – Psychosis, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

Session 3

  • What is an anxiety disorder?
  • First aid for anxiety disorders
  • Crisis first aid after a traumatic event
  • Alcohol, drugs and anxiety disorders
  • Treatment and resources for anxiety disorders
  • Cognitive distortions and CBT
  • Personality disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Self-harm

Session 4

  • What is psychosis?
  • Risk factors for psychosis
  • Alcohol, drugs and psychosis
  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Warning signs of developing psychosis
  • Crisis first aid for acute psychosis
  • Treatment and resources for psychosis
  • Recovery and building resources
  • Action planning for using MHFA
